Find the total area of cardboard used in making a match box, complete with the sliding portion, 4 cm long, 2.5 cm wide and 1.2 cm deep (Please ignore the thickness of the cardboard).
Please help to solve this.

The matchbox is a rectangular parallelopiped with dimensions 4 cm x 2.5 cm x 1.2 cm.
So the total surface area of the parallelopiped is 2(4x2.5 + 2.5x1.2 + 1.2x4) = 35.6 cm%5E2.

Now, the bottom and side walls of the match box has two sheets (one each for the sliding portion and the outer envelope) of cardboards, so additional area is (2x1.2x4 + 4x2.5) = 19.6 cm%5E2.

So total area of cardboard reqd. is (35.6 + 19.6) = 55.2 cm%5E2.
