Question 293753: Having problems solving this word problem can someone please help:
Sandbox: a civic group builds a sandbox that is enclosed by 1-foot railroad ties. The group needs to find the area inside the sandbox to find the amount of sand needed. Use the figure and the formula for area to write an expression that represents the area inside the sandbox.
The figure is a picture of a square: above the top side there is a bracket on each end that has 1ft wrote above them. the left side of the square has a bracket at top and bottom that has 1ft wrote next to them. the bottom side has one bracket running from end to end with x-ft, and the right side has a bracket from top to bottom with x-ft.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! There are several problems with your problem.
First : Nothing is "wrote" anywhere. There might be words written.
Second the figure can't be a square because sand is three dimensional. A square is two dimensional.
To find how much sand we need length, width and height (height or depth).
It appears the sand box is 1 foot square with a depth of x.
We need x cubic feet of sand.
