Let x = original side of the square

Perimeter after folding = x+%2B+x+%2B+%281%2F2%29%2Ax+%2B+%281%2F2%29%2Ax+=+3x+=+12
x=4
Area of the original square = L * W = 4*4 = 16 square centimeters.
