You only need h=2 to solve the problem.
An octagon has 8 segments, each with an angle of 45 degrees.
Take one segment, draw in the heigth as you would on any triangle.
heigth=radius*sin 45 degrees.
h=1*sin45 degrees
h=.707
a=bh/2
a=(1*.707)/2
a=0.3535 each segment
8 segments times 0.3535=2.828 sq ft.
