Question 196935: construct a barrel(shape of a right cylinder) to hold 150gals need top and bottom diameter 2 1/2ft. what must the height of the barrel be to the nearest 1/2in.?
I've got the circumference of the barrel to be 94in. would I use perimeter or what? HELP!
Thanks tammy

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
construct a barrel(shape of a right cylinder) to hold 150gals need top and
bottom diameter 2 1/2ft. what must the height of the barrel be to the nearest
1/2in.? I've got the circumference of the barrel to be 94in.
We don't need the circumference.
:
A few simple facts will make this easy to understand:
;
The shape of a barrel is a cylinder
:
The volume of cylinder: V = pi%2Ar%5E2%2Ah
:
If the diameter is 2.5 ft, the radius = 1.25 ft
:
The volume is in cubic ft: 1 cu ft = 7.481 gallons
therefore 150 gallons equal:
150%2F7.481 = 20.05 cu ft
:
The equation:
pi%2A1.25%5E2%2Ah = 20.05
4.91h = 20.05
h = 20.05%2F4.91
h = 4.08 ~ 4 ft is the height of barrel which holds 150 gal with 2.5 ft diameter
;
;
Check solution:
pi%2A1.25%5E2%2A4.08 * 7.481 = 149.8 ~ 150gal
