The area of a trapezoid: A = (a+b)
a = the shorter base
b = (a+8), the other base
h = (a+2), the height

(a+(a+8)) = 48
multiply both sides by 2
(a+2)(2a+8) = 96
FOIL
2a^2 + 8a + 4a + 16 = 96
2a^2 + 12a + 16 - 96 = 0
2a^2 + 12a - 80 = 0
divide both sides by 2, solve
a^2 + 6a - 40 = 0
