Question 1111171: If the long width of a hexagon is 30m, what is the total area?
I've tried working it out myself by I was taught to work it out from the short width and haven't been able to find a method for calculating it using the long width instead. Found 2 solutions by Alan3354, josmiceli:Answer by Alan3354(69443) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If the long width of a hexagon is 30m, what is the total area?
I've tried working it out myself by I was taught to work it out from the short width and haven't been able to find a method for calculating it using the long width instead.
-------------
By "long width" you probably mean across the vertices.
that's the radius, and or a hexagon it is the side length, s.
------------------
For any regular polygon with n sides of length s,
=================
You could find the "short width," that's across the flats, and called the apothem using the fact that a hexagon is 6 equilateral triangles.
-----------
I'm not in favor of memorizing formulas in general. Use the fact that it's 6 triangles (or another # for a different polygon).
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If I divide the hexagon into 6 equalateral
triangles, their sides will be m
-------------------
Next find the area of one of the equilateral triangles.
----------------------------
To find the area of the hexagon: m
I went over it twice, so I think it's right
