By "long width" you probably mean across the vertices.
that's the radius, and or a hexagon it is the side length, s.

For any regular polygon with n sides of length s,
Area+=+ns%5E2%2Acot%28180%2Fn%29%2F4
=================
You could find the "short width," that's across the flats, and called the apothem using the fact that a hexagon is 6 equilateral triangles.

I'm not in favor of memorizing formulas in general. Use the fact that it's 6 triangles (or another # for a different polygon).

If I divide the hexagon into 6 equalateral
triangles, their sides will be +30%2F2+=+15+ m

Next find the area of one of the equilateral triangles.

To find the area of the hexagon:
