where r is the base radius and L is the slant height of the cone.

For your cone the slant height is sqrt%2824%5E2+%2B+7%5E2%29 = sqrt%28625%29 = 25 inches.

Then the lateral area of the cone is S = pi%2A7%2A25 = 3.14%2A7%2A25 inches.
