Question 1057394: The perimeter of a square window is 18 feet 4 inches.
(a) Find the area of the window in square inches.

(b) Find the area of the window in square feet. (Round your answer to one decimal place.)
I cannot understand how to convert the ft and inches part into plain inches I can use to solve the problem in each section it is asking for. Someone told me I needed to divide the 4ft into thirds, but I don't think I am doing it correctly.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Either convert feet to inches or inches to feet.
I'll convert feet to inches.
P=18%2A12%2B4=216%2B4=220in
A square has 4 equal sides,
4s=220
s=55in
The area of a square with side s is,
A=s%5E2
A=%2855%29%5E2
A=3025in%5E2
1ft*1ft=12in*12in
1ft%5E2=144in%5E2
So then,
A=3025in%5E2*1%2F144%28ft%5E2%29%2F%28in%5E2%29
A=3025%2F144in%5E2*1%2F144%28ft%5E2%29%2F%28in%5E2%29
A=21%261%2F144ft%5E2
