Are you using sqrt%281.2%29=1.2 ?
That is simply wrong.

In fact, sqrt%281.2%29%2Bsqrt%282.8%29%3C%3E3.1 as any good approximation to nearest tenth.

Try just using a handheld calculator:
Find sqrt%281.2%29 and find sqrt%282.8%29. Now sum them. What do you find?
