f(x) = -x^2 + x + 1
f(a - 2) = -(a - 2)^2 + (a - 2) + 1
f(a - 2) = -(a^2 - 4a + 4) + (a - 2) + 1
f(a - 2) = -a^2 + 4a - 4 + a - 2 + 1
f(a - 2) = -a^2 + 5a - 5
