It can have three roots, two of which are identical.

In a sense it can, and it can have only 1.
eg (x-2)^3 has x = 2 as its only solution, but it's multiplicity 3.
(x-2)^2 is a quadratic that has 2 as the only zero, but it's multiplicity 2.
