Use the caret mark, "^", made with a Shift-6.

x^2 means

e^(rt) means but be careful: e^rt means

x^(p^4) means

e^(i*pi) + 1 = 0 means

Likewise, the underscore, "_", made with Shift-(minus) represents subscripts.

x_1 means

a_1x^(n-1) means
