Question 218124: A 20 in (on the diagonal) TV has a width of 16 in. What is the height? Found 2 solutions by drj, MathTherapy:Answer by drj(1380) (Show Source):
Step 1. We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve this problem where the sum of the squares of the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse (the diagonal in this case). We also note that the diagonal of a rectangle divides into two right triangles.
Step 2. Let w=16 be the width and h be the height.
Step 3. Using the Pythagorean Theorem we have
Subtract 196 to both sides of the equation
Take the square root to both sides of the equation
inches
Step 4. ANSWER: The height is 14.28 inches.
I hope the above steps and explanation were helpful.
