A 20 in (on the diagonal) TV has a width of 16 in. What is the height?

Step 1. We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve this problem where the sum of the squares of the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse (the diagonal in this case). We also note that the diagonal of a rectangle divides into two right triangles.

Step 2. Let w=16 be the width and h be the height.

Step 3. Using the Pythagorean Theorem we have

20%5E2=16%5E2%2Bh%5E2

400=196%2Bh%5E2

Subtract 196 to both sides of the equation

400-196=h%5E2

204=h%5E2

Take the square root to both sides of the equation

sqrt%28204%29=sqrt%28h%5E2%29=h

h=14.28 inches

Step 4. ANSWER: The height is 14.28 inches.

I hope the above steps and explanation were helpful.

A 20 in (on the diagonal) TV has a width of 16 in. What is the height?

Using Pythagorean formula, a%5E2+%2B+b%5E2+=+c%5E2 to find the height, and using H for height, we get: H%5E2+%2B+16%5E2+=+20%5E2

H%5E2+%2B+256+=+400

H%5E2+=+400+-+256

sqrt%28H%5E2%29+=+sqrt%28144%29

Therefore, H or height = highlight_green%2812%29
