Question 1117265: Find a number such that the square root of 6 more than 3 times the number is 6
The number is __

Found 3 solutions by addingup, ikleyn, greenestamps:

This is what I understand you're saying:
sqrt6(3x) = 6
If this is correct:
2.45(3x) = 6
7.35x = 6
x = 6/7.35 = 0.82
------------------------------
Check:
sqrt6(3*0.82) = 6
2.45(2.46) = 6 Correct

.
The correct translation of the sentence to Math is   T H I S:

sqrt%286%2B3x%29 = 6.

Then, after squaring both sides

6 + 3x = 36,

3x = 30

x = 10.

Answer.   The number under the question is  10.

And since @greenestamps said something about other interpretation, I must answer:

    English (at least English of that level) is built on standard combinations of word; on standard patterns.

    The other pattern that @greenestamps is talking about, is NEVER used (or never can be used) as a standard pattern;
    so it is NEVER used as an equivalent pattern.

    The logic does not work in such cases.

    Again: although @greenestamps can speculate about logical possibilities, logic does not work
    and does not rule in this case: the patterns rule.

================

Moreover, and even worst, all argument by @greenestamps against me in this his post are DEMAGOGIC.

1. "English is not tutor ikleyn's first language."

     Yes, it is not. But how does it relate to the problem under discussion ?

                      - No relation. Demagogy.

     With my English, I can solve, write, clearly present, explain and discuss any school Math problem and even far above the average school level

     (proved about 10000 times).

2. "She likes to say that any answer other than hers is WRONG".

     WRONG statement. I say it only when the other answer is really wrong.

     Actually, in those cases, when the other solution is FATALLY wrong.

     Demagogy again.

3. "but many times that is not correct."

      First, such a statement must be accompanied by references.

      Second, as everybody else, I can make a mistake. So, the statement above by @greenestamps does not carry any specific meaning.

      Third, I believe that I am incorrect in MUCH lesser number of cases, than other tutors in this forum,

      and can compete in it even with @greenestamps (although I never did it explicitly, pedaling his errors).

Three demagogic statements in one post - is it not too much ?

Today I corrected 3 (three) wrong solutions from other tutors:

from addingup

from shin123

from stanbon
https://www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/Rate-of-work-word-problems/Rate-of-work-word-problems.faq.question.1117256.html

I assume that I deserved a collective "thanks" from all of them (or three personal thanks).

Instead I got an "impeachment" from @greenestamps.

Dear tutors, do you understand it: without my everyday cleaning work, this forum would become a garbage box long time ago.

There is no way to interpret the problem the way tutor addingup did.

The USUAL way to interpret the problem is the way tutor ikleyn did:

"the square root of 6 more than 3 times the number is 6" --> "the square root of (6 more than 3 times the number) is 6" --> sqrt%286%2B3x%29+=+6

That equation leads easily to the "nice" answer x=10.

HOWEVER...

English is not tutor ikleyn's first language. She likes to say that any answer other than hers is WRONG; but many times that is not correct.

In fact the poor wording of this question allows the interpretation that the equation is

"the square root of 6 more than 3 times the number is 6" --> "(the square root of 6) more than (3 times the number) is 6" --> 3x%2Bsqrt%286%29+=+6

This of course is a different equation that leads to a different solution.

3x%2Bsqrt%286%29+=+6
3x+=+6-sqrt%286%29
x+=+2-sqrt%286%29%2F3

Since this answer is less "pleasant" than the answer obtained with the other interpretation, it is highly probable that the other interpretation was intended.

However, both interpretations are grammatically valid....
