we square both sides and get
x%5E2+%2B+2x+%2B+1+=+19+-+x
x%5E2+%2B+3x+-+18+=+0
Now factor and solve...
(x + 6)(x - 3) = 0
x = -6 or x = 3
Now we plug in to see if any of these work out...
x = 3 works but x = -6 does not...so
x = 3
