Question 550787: Direction: use one of the formulas for special series to find the sum of the series.
42
∑ 1
i=1
1. 42 is on top of the symbol, i=1 is on bottom and 1 on right side.
2. 5 on top, n on right, n=1 on bottom. the answer is 15 but how?
3. 18 on top, i=1 on bottom, i on right.
4. 20 on top, k on right, k=1 on bottom
5. 6 on top, n^2 on right, n=1 on bottom.
6. 10 on top, i^2 on right, i=1 on bottom
7. 12 on top, i^2 on right, i=1 on bottom
8. 35 on top, k^2 on right, k=1 on bottom
again all these problems are shown in this symbol: ∑

Question 551562: Short answer: Raise the quantity in parentheses to the indicated exponent, and simply the resulting express. Express answer with positive exponents.
(-16(x^-2)y^3)^2
-----------------
(80x^-2y^3)
Actually it is one parentheses around entire equation on both sides not two at the top not two at the bottom it just one parentheses around entire equation.

Question 553046: I am currently tutoring a student at a local middle school. She had this pre-algebra problem from a test that I believe has a syntax error which makes it difficult to solve. However, I have forgotten the rules that would make this a syntax error for me to explain it to her. This is the equation as written:
(-2)-(-8)/(6+4x(-4)-(-6))=x
I have entered this equation on a spreadsheet program and it will not take the equation as written. It forces the parenthesis in this order:
(-2-(-8)/(6+4*(-4)-(-6)))=x
Why is the first equation incorrect and what are the steps to solve?
Respectfully,
Natalie Witte
