Remember the word "PEMDAS"
remembered by "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally"
 
1. P ---- Simplify inside innermost parentheses.
2. E ---- Do exponents left to right
3. M,D -- Do multiplications and divisions left to right
4. A,S -- Do additions and subtractions left to right
Always do 1 first, then 2, then 3 then 4.
