Technically, this problem is invalid. There is an APPARENT pattern; but there might be other patterns in the given sequence of numbers that might produce different n-th terms.

To find the pattern I see -- and thus be able to write a formula for the n-th term -- first look at the numerators of the 2nd through 4th terms:

5, 7, 9, ...

Working backwards in that pattern, the 1st term should be 3. So rewrite the first term "1" as a fraction with numerator 3. Then the sequence is

3/3, 5/7, 7/15, 9/31, ...

We have already looked at the pattern for the numerators:

3, 5, 7, 9, ..., 2n+1

I leave it to you to find the pattern in the denominators:

3, 7, 15, 31, ..., ???
