There is no one "right" answer to ANY problem of this kind. Put any number next and it will be a valid sequence.

Presumably the author of the problem used a specific rule or pattern to generate the sequence, and that rule will produce a specific next number.

However, it is highly probable that there is a very different pattern that also produces the sequence of numbers but produces a different next number.

In the end, solving any problem like this is more a matter of getting in the mind of the person who created the problem -- and that is not mathematics.

It is just thousand years at this forum we explain,  day after day,  that this question makes no any Math sense.

Every,  any and each number can be next:  3,  5,  77,  -13,  9%2F77,  sqrt%282%29,  e%5Epi  and even  pi%5Ee.

Somebody can come and derive 30 feet long formula to predict  "the next number",  but again,
it can not transform a nonsense to something different.

There is even a  SPECIAL  LESSON
    - Make any sequence valid
in this site,  where an enthusiastic tutor  PROVED  it mathematically,  that for  ANY  given number
the formula can be written providing this  arbitrary  number to be next.

I just have proposed to concerned amateurs of such puzzles to create special advertising-based commercial site

"What_is_the_next_number.COM"  and make their millions dollars there.
