Question 98084: This is a word problem that I was given and am having grief solving.
You have a carpet that measures 12' x 3' and you need to carpet an hallway that measures 9' x 4'. WITHOUT folding the carpet, how can you carpet the area with only making ONE cut.
This was a two part question. On the first part you were allowed to fold the carpet and I figured it out, but I cannot get this part. Perhaps making multiple cuts without taking your scissors off the carpet, but I can't get it to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! You have a carpet that measures 12' x 3' and you need to carpet an hallway that measures 9' x 4'. WITHOUT folding the carpet, how can you carpet the area with only making ONE cut.
------------------------------------
Draw a rectangle that is higher than wide.
Let it be 12' high and 4' wide.
------------------------
Draw another rectangle that is higher than wide.
Let this rectangle be 9' high and 3' wide
--------------------------------------
Place the upper left corner of the smaller rectangle on the upper left
corner of the larger rectangle and the left side of the smaller along
the left side of the larger.
--------------------------------
With your scissors cut the larger rectangle along the lower side and
the right side of the smaller rectangle. That is one cut with a 90
degree angle.
