A. Eliminate numbered toothpicks:


Leaving you with:


One big red square, and one small square inside of it. Nobody said the squares had to be the same size.

B. Take away the toothpicks numbered 1 and 3 in the diagram above. That will leave you with one big square and 5 small squares.
