3 to 2 is the same as 3x to 2x

Equation::
3x + 2x = 12
5x = 12
x = 2.4
------
shorter piece:: 2x = 2*2.4 = 4.8 ft
longer piece:: 3x = 3*2.4 = 7.2 ft
