Question 906378: QUESTION: The length of plot is 4 times its breadth.A playground measuring 12 meter square occupies one third of total area of plot.What is the length of plot?
I tried: length(l)=4*breadth(b),

1/3(4b*b)= 12,
after solving above equation,
b= 3m so, l= 12m (My answer)
BUT IN THE BOOK ANSWER IS 120m(length).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you got right answer
the book answer is wrong, should be 12m
if the length of plot is 120m (as book suggests) and length(l)=4*breadth(b), then width will be b=l%2F4=120m%2F4=30m
so, the total area of plot would be A=lb=120m%2A30m=3600m%5E2
but, you are given that a playground measuring 12m%5E2 occupies one+third of total area of plot
since total area of plot is A=3600m%5E2, one third of it will be %281%2F3%29A=3600m%5E2%2F3=1200m%5E2, which is NOT what you are given
try with length l=12m, then width b=3m
the total area of plot would be A=lb=12m%2A3m=36m%5E2
one third of it will be %281%2F3%29A=36m%5E2%2F3=12m%5E2, which IS what you are given
