Question 866368: A rectangle has a perimeter of 8s x 1/4 units. Which of the following could not be the dimensions of the rectangle?
A. 3s units long and s x 1/8 units wide
B. 2s units long and 2s x 1/8 units wide
C. 3s x 1/16 units long and s x 1/8 units wide
D. 2s x 1/16 units long and 2s x 1/16 units wide
This is for my child, we've searched to arrive at the answer but are stumped on the formula to arrive at the answer. Given me/us the answer is not what we want but an explanation on how to arrive at the answer or in this case, which would not be the answer.
Thanks,

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
What does each symbol in the 8s x 1/4 mean? Is it, 8s%2A%281%2F4%29? We need more information to understand how s is related to either or both dimensions.
Using w for width and L for length, the formula for perimeter is 2%2Aw%2B2%2AL, which can also be expressed 2%2A%28w%2BL%29.

As I spend some time thinking about the symbols, the "x" seems to be "multiplication"; and you might be able to test of the answer choices to see which one, when applying the perimeter formula, gives you the 8s(1/4) result.

(More careful calculation on paper showed that none of the choices is correct.)
