Let us call the width of the rectangle x.
because the length is 3 times the width, the length is 3x.
adding the lengths of the sides of the rectangle to find the perimeter gives us
x + 3x + x + 3x
simplifying this gives
8x
since the perimeter is 72 cm then
8x = 72 cm
dividing both side by 8 gives
x = 9cm
so the width of the rectangle is 9 cm
and, because the length is 3 times the width, the length is 27 cm.
so the rectangle's dimensions are
27 cm by 9 cm.
