You can put this solution on YOUR website!

you are given:
The width W of a rectangle is 6+km less than twice its length L}
means: W=2L-6km
you know that the area of a rectangle is A=L%2AW
and, you also know that the area is 80km%5E2
so, use

A=L%2AW...plug in all known values
80km%5E2=L%2A%282L-6km%29
80km%5E2=2L%5E2-6Lkm%29..move 80km%5E2 to the right and you will have quadratic equation to solve for L
0=2L%5E2-6Lkm-80km%5E2%29....use quadratic formula
L+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+....a=2, b=-6km and c=-80km%5E2

L+=+%28-%28-6km%29+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-6km%29%5E2-4%2A2%2A%28-80km%5E2%29+%29%29%2F%282%2A2%29+
L+=+%286km+%2B-+sqrt%2836km%5E2%2B640km%5E2+%29%29%2F4+
L+=+%286km+%2B-+sqrt%28676km%5E2+%29%29%2F4+
L+=+%286km+%2B-+%2826km+%29%29%2F4+....disregard negative value because the length cannot be negative
L+=+%286km+%2B+26km+%29%2F4+
L+=+32km+%2F4+
L+=+8km+......now we can find the W
W=2L-6km...plug in L
W=2%2A8km-6km
W=16km-6km
W=10km

check:

A=L%2AW
A=8km%2A10km
A=80km%5E2

**
let x=length
2x-6=width
Area=length*width
80=x(2x-6)=2x^2-6x
2x^2-6x-80=0
x^2-3x-40=0
(x-8)(x+5)=0
x=-5 (Reject)
or
x=8
2x-6=10
ans:
length=8 km
width=10 km

Let represent the measure of the length. Then the width is .

The area of a rectangle is the length times the width so:

Distribute, put the quadratic in standard form, and solve by factoring (hint: divide the whole thing by 2 before factoring). Discard the negative root. Once you know the value of , calculate
