want to know which rectangle is closest to squareness dimensions are 4 x 5; 8 x 9; and 10 x 12.

In a square the length and the width are the same so the fraction (ratio):

%28WIDTH%29%2F%28LENGTH%29 is exactly 1.

The closer to a square a rectangle is, the closer the fraction (ratio) %28WIDTH%29%2F%28LENGTH%29 is to 1.  And we can tell by changing the
fraction to a decimal.

In the case of 4 x 5,

%28WIDTH%29%2F%28LENGTH%29=4%2F5=.8000

In the case of 8 x 9,

%28WIDTH%29%2F%28LENGTH%29=8%2F9=.888888889

In the case of 10 x 12,

%28WIDTH%29%2F%28LENGTH%29=10%2F12=.833333333

So the closest to 1 is .888888889 or the 8 x 9 rectangle.
