Question 271108: The inside of a running track has has the form of a rectangle with length 100 yards and width 70 yards, with a semicircle at each end.
a) How many square yards of sod will it take to cover this area (including both the rectangle and the semicircular ends)? Round up to the next whole square yard.
b)How long is the inside edge of the track (around the outside of the sodded region)?
I had no idea where to start with this one so I started with the area of the rectangle section: 100*70=7000. Now I'm stuck of how to add in the semicircles to get my answers. Answer by Greenfinch(383) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Radius of circle is 70/2 or 35 yards
Area is 2 semicircles r one circle = 1225 x pi = 3848.45 sq yd
Rectangle is 100 x 70 = 7000 sq yd
a)Total is 10 848.45 sq yd or, rounding up, 10849 sq yd
b)Length of inside track is 2 x 100 + 70 x pi= 419.9 sq yd
