What is the measure of the length of a rectangle that has a width
of 2 meters and a perimeter of 14 meters? Explain your thinking.

The perimeter of 14 meters is the total of all four sides
The right and left sides are 2 meters each for they are the
same as the width. That accounts for 2x2 or 4 meters of
the 14 meters. Then when I subtract 14 - 4, that leaves
10 for the top and bottom sides. Since they are equal they
must each be one-half of the remaining 10 meters, so they
must be 5 meters each, and that is the length.
