My response. Now it makes sense.

Solution 

Perimeter = L + W + L + W


20 = (3x+4) + (x-2) + 3x+4) + (x-2),

20 = 8x + 4,

20 - 4 = 8x  ====>  8x = 16  ====>  x = 16%2F8 = 2.


Answer.  x = 2.
