The formula you would use is .08X+2.4=c c being the cost of the trip, and x representing the amount of miles to be traveled.
to calculate 44 miles you substitute 44 into the equation
.08(44)+2.40=C
C=$5.92
to find a variable in the equation say x you form the equation
.08(X)+2.40=6.40
first you subtract 2.40 from each side
.08(X)=4.00
now you divide out .08 from each side to isolate X
X=50 miles,
