Question 37413: what is an extraneous root?
Answer by fractalier(6550) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Sometimes you solve an equation and get two answers. By plugging them in to the original equation to check, you discover one (or both) do not work. That is an example of an extraneous root. Very common in rational expressions/equations, and equations containing radicals.
