Building the sandbox is 1 job. Peter and Gene each have his own rate of work.

Let x be the time in hours for Gene to build the sandbox (1 job).
The rates of work are these:

Peter: 1%2F%285x%29
Gene: 1%2Fx
Both Together: 1%2F5

The rates work as sum when they both work together.
highlight%281%2F%285x%29%2B1%2Fx=1%2F5%29.
Solve for x and you can find 5x. Your elementary school fraction skills are all you need.
