You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if it takes the experienced painter x hours to paint a fence, then the FRACTION of the fence the painter paints in 4 hours is 4/x

similarly, the FRACTION that the inexperienced painter paints is 4/2x

together they paint the WHOLE fence so (4/x)+(4/2x)=1 ... multiplying by x gives 4+(4/2)=x ... 6=x

:
Let t = time required by experience painter working alone
Then 2t = time required by the inexperienced painter working alone
:
Let the completed job = 1
:
4%2Ft + 4%2F2t = 1
:
Multiply equation by 2t:
2(4) + 4 = 2t
:
8 + 4 = 2t
:
2t = 12
t = 6 hrs experienced painter by himself
:
:
Check solution:
4/6 + 4/12 =
2/3 + 1/3 = 1
