You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A can do a piece of work in 18 days and B in 12 days.
They begin together but A goes away 2 days before the work is completed.
The time in which the work was finished is-
:
Let t = total days worked worked by B to finish the job
then
(t-2) = time worked by A, who left 2 days before completion
:
Let the completed job = 1
:
%28%28t-2%29%29%2F18 + t%2F12 = 1
multiply by 36 to clear the denominators
2(t-2) + 3t = 36
2t - 4 + 3t = 36
5t = 36 + 4
t = 40/5
t = 8 days to complete the job
:
:
See if that works out (A works only 6 days)
6%2F18 + 8%2F12 =
1%2F3 + 2%2F3 = 1
