if 6 roofers take 2 days to put on a new roof, how long would it take 4 roofers to do the same job, assuming they each work at the same rate?
:
Find the number of man-days to do the job
6 * 2 = 12 man-days
:
"how long would it take 4 roofers to do the same job,"
let d = no. of days for 4 men to do it
4d = 12
d = 12/4
d = 3 days

You could also say like this:
You now have 2%2F3 of the work force, so you will need 3%2F2 the time.
Workers are: 6%2A%282%2F3%29=4
Time required is: 2%2A%283%2F2%29=3
