            Part  (a)  solution.


Their combined rate of filling is  1%2F2 - 1%2F4 = 1%2F4  of the tank volume per hour.


Therefore, the process will take 4 hours.

A tank is filled by an intake pipe in 2 hours and emptied by an outlet pipe in
4 hours.
The intake pipe puts liquid in twice as fast as the outlet pipe takes liquid
out.  So when both pipes are opened, in 2 hours it'll be half full, so it'll
be full in 4 hours.
