Question 1827: Question: how i can solve this equation.
x + y^(.5) = 7
y + x^(.5) = 11
i know the answer of these equations but dont know how to solve ?
meance in first equation just y plus x to the power .5 and in second equation swap x and y.
answer is x = 4 ...... and y = 9
but i want to know the method for solving this equation :-)

My answer:
sqrt(3x+4)^2=[(sqrt(5-x)+3]^2
3x+4=(5-x)+(6)sqrt(5-x)+9
3x+4=14-x+(6)sqrt(5-x)
4x-10=(6)sqrt(5-x)
(4x-10)^2=[(6)sqrt(5-x)]^2
16x^2-80x+100=36(5-x)
16x^2-80x+100=180-36x
16x^2-44x-80=0
(16x+20)(x-4)
16x+20=0 or x-4=0
16x/16=20/16 or x=4
x=-5/4 or x=4
****x=-5/4 is an extraneous solution****

**There is a superscript 3 before the square root symbol**
^3 sqrt(x^2-7x-15) +3=0
My answer:
^3 sqrt(x^2-7x-15) +3=0
(^3 sqrt(x^2-7x-15)^3=-3^3
x^2-7x-15=-27
x^2-7x+12=0
(x-4) or (x-3)
x-4=0 or x-3=0
x=4 or x=3

Question 7103: I would appreciate it if someone would help me solve this equation:
sqrt3x-1/2=4
All of 3x-1/2 is supposed to be square rooted. So I tried squaring both sides of the equation to get rid of the square root. So I got:
3x-1/2=16
Then I cross multiplied and now I have:
3x-1/32
It's been a year since I took Algebra1, so even if I've been correct so far, I don't know where to go from here. Thank you in advance to the tutor who helps me with this.

would it be

Question 8143: I need help on study tips. We are currently working on Radicals and moving FAST to Quadratic formulas. When I see it done it all makes perfect sense, but I am not internalizing any of it. Does anyone have ANY solutions to help remember the right order of steps?
