Question 902829: (sqrt3x+1 - sqrt2x-1 = sqrtx-4)
I have looked at similar ones to try and figure out how to work it, BUT all of the similar ones have an PLUS between the first part of the equation, while this one has a MINUS sign. I have worked, reworked, and reworked this equation and again for the past 2 nights. I do not know what I am doing wrong. According to the book, the answer is suppose to be 5. I've plugged 5 back into the original equation and it is the right answer, but HOW am I suppose to get it? I'm completely stumped.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
sqrt%283x%2B1%29-+sqrt%282x-1%29=+sqrt%28x-4%29+
sqrt%283%2A5%2B1%29-+sqrt%282%2A5-1%29=+sqrt%285-4%29+
sqrt%2816%29-+sqrt%289%29=+sqrt%281%29+
4-3=1
sqrt%283x%2B1%29-+sqrt%282x-1%29=+sqrt%28x-4%29+
sqrt%283x%2B1%29=+sqrt%282x-1%29%2B+sqrt%28x-4%29+
Now you have your desired PLUS .
