: I'm supposed to express in simpest radical form.
(square root of 3 minus square root of 5)(square root of 3 minus square root of 5).
Would you use the problem solving technique of (a-b)*(a+b)=asquare-bsquarePlease help!!
Thanks!!! This question is from textbook algebra structure and method
You can put this solution on YOUR website! express in simpest radical form.
(square root of 3 minus square root of 5)(square root of 3 minus square root of 5).
-----------------
(sqrt3 - sqt5)(sqrt3 - sqrt5)
Use FOIL to get:
F: sqrt3*sqrt3 = 3
O: -sqrt5*sqrt3 = -sqrt15
I: -sqrt3*sqrt5 = sqrt 15
L: sqrt5*sqrt5 = 5
------------
Combine these to get:
8 - 2sqrt15
===============
The form you could use here is (a-b)(a-b)=a^2-2ab+b^2
This is called "the square of a binomial".
