84/-6=-14

I know this probably isn't much help but I'm going to explain it as best as I can.

1.) Depending on how you enter the equation into your calculator it can effect the answer.

I used the following:

%2812%2B8sqrt%2881%29%29%2F%28-6%29

and got 0 as my answer.


***However, when I used parenthesis like this:

%28%2812%2B8sqrt%2881%29%29%29%2F%28-6%29

I got -14

2.) If we were to do the calculations just one by one this is what I would do.


%28%2812%2B8sqrt%2881%29%29%29%2F%28-6%29

%28%2812%2B8%289%29%29%29%2F%28-6%29

%28%2812%2B72%29%29%2F%28-6%29

%28%2812%2B72%29%29%2F%28-6%29

%2884%29%2F%28-6%29


= -14

3.) As you can see I got -14 too. Perhaps the book has a typo...

If the answer is 0, then the problem is: 12+%2B+8sqrt%2881%29%2F-6, as opposed to: %2812+%2B+8sqrt%2881%29%29%2F-6. Do you see the difference?

You need to state the problem correctly, WITH PARENTHESES.
