To remove the square root sign, simply square both sides
√(3y + 1) = 6

3y + 1 = 36 {squared each side}
3y = 35 {subtracted 1 from each side}
y = 35/3 {divided each side by 3}
y = 11 2/3 {wrote as a mixed number}
