Since 20 is the least common multiple of the denominators, 4 and 5, multiply everything by 20: 20%28x%2F4%29%2B20%283x%29%2F5+=+20%2817%29.
5x%2B12x=340.
17x=340. So, x=20.
Verify by plugging x=20 into original equation:
20%2F4%2B%283%2A20%29%2F5+=+5%2B12+=+17.
