Question 330436: Hello,
Need to find the exact and approximate solutions to three decimal places for the following: (x-6)^2=20.
I am unable to solve, and have even tried using Algebrator, but cannot interpret.
Thanks!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
taking square root ___ x - 6 = ± sqrt(20) = ± 2 sqrt(5)

adding 6 ___ x = 6 ± 2 sqrt(5)

use calculator to find 2 sqrt(5) , add to and subtract from 6

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

%28x-6%29%5E2=20 Start with the given equation.

x-6=%22%22%2B-sqrt%2820%29 Take the square root of both sides.

x-6=sqrt%2820%29 or x-6=-sqrt%2820%29 Break up the "plus/minus" to form two equations.

x-6=2%2Asqrt%285%29 or x-6=-2%2Asqrt%285%29 Simplify the square root.

x=6%2B2%2Asqrt%285%29 or x=6-2%2Asqrt%285%29 Add 6 to both sides.

Answer:

So the solutions are x=6%2B2%2Asqrt%285%29 or x=6-2%2Asqrt%285%29.

and they approximate to x=10.472 or x=1.528
