How many quarters were in the piggy bank, and how many dimes were in there?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let Q be the number of quarters.
Then the number of dimes is 56-Q.
Quarters contribute 25Q cents to the total.
Dimes contribute 10*(56-Q) cents to the total.
Your "value" equation is
25Q + 10*(56-Q) = 725 cents.
Simplify it and solve for Q:
25Q + 560 - 10Q = 725,
15Q = 725 - 560,
15Q = 165 ---> Q = = 11.
Answer. 11 quarters and 56-11 = 45 dimes.
Check. 10*45 + 11*25 = 725 cents. Correct !!
