Isolate the square root and then square left and right sides.

sqrt%283x%2B1%29=x-1
%28sqrt%283x%2B1%29%29%5E2=%28x-1%29%5E2
3x%2B1=x%5E2-2x%2B1

Now just solve the quadratic equation.

x%5E2-5x=0
x%28x-5%29=0

And both answers seemed to work:
