This Lesson (Adding and Subtracting Square Roots (Radicals)* (YouTube Video of Dr. Rapalje)) was created by by rapaljer(4671) : View Source, ShowAbout rapaljer: Retired Professor of Mathematics from Seminole State College of Florida after 36 years.
This video is from one of my Basic Algebra classes (circa 1994). It should be helpful for students in Basic or Intermediate Algebra or Algebra I.
As in previous sections about square roots, make sure that you KNOW (memorize by heart!) the PERFECT SQUARES:
These are the critical numbers to KNOW and recognize: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169
In this section, remember that, just as you NEVER combine unlike terms, you must NEVER combine unlike radicals. For example, combine to give you .
However, in the expression , these are NOT like radicals.
They do NOT combine. This expression does not simplify!
