Question 652586: Hello! I am having a hard time understanding the way much of the online math resources are written. They all seem to be using a very mathematical sort of dialect (thus we can see... or to find x we need to complete a square, with no word on how one might accomplish this "completion of a square"), which in my opinion is counterproductive--the very people needing help with math are the very ones who won't understand the language! Anyways, that's a bit long-winded, so here's the problem:
"If a parabola opening to the left has a vertex at (-1, -3) and passes through point (-3,-2), what is the coefficient of the squared term in the parabola's equation?"
Thanks very much for reading this!

Question 663432: My teacher put this problem and solution on the board and I need a laymans termed explaination of why he did certain things in the solution.
3x^2+4y^2-6x-24y+39=0
3(x^2-2x+1)+4(y^2-6y+1)=0-39+3+36
3(x-1)^2+4(y-3)^2=0
So, I get confused when my teacher added 1 inside both of the parenthesis...why did he do that? Where did he get the 1 from? Why not just leave the 1 out of both of the parenthesis? Please help!
