Question 282824: Are there any shortcuts on learning the cases of a hyperbola,a parabola and an ellipse?
By cases i mean:
For example let's talk for a hyperbola:
Condition
Eccentricity
Equation of hyperbola when Axis is on x-axis,y-axis,parallel to x-axis and y-axis itself.
Equation of directrixes for the afore-mentioned axis settings.

Question 285165: The question is : Identify the vertex, focus, axis of symmetry, and directrix for the parabola whose equation is y^2– 8y + 16x– 64 = 0.
I tried completing the square, but I only got more confused. My textbook does not say what the directrix is or how to identify it or the focus, axis of symmetry, or the vertex as well. It mentions them, but does not show the process of finding them. Could you explain it?

Question 287517: in the following exercises, V denotes the vertex of a parabola, F the focus, and D the directrix. Two of these are given. Find the third.
D: y=2, V(2,4)
I really don't get it and I had been studying this in class for two days and i havent done the homework either, I'm really hurting my grade. My teacher just can't explain it very well. Well, for me that is.

Question 287609: I have some questions about figuring out what types of equations represent what types of graphs. I know that you should rearrange the co-terms. For this equation:(x + 4)^2 - (y - 8 )^2 = 39 is this a graph of a hyperbola? I am not 100% sure, seeing that the standard form of hyperbolas is (x-h)^2/a^2 - (y-k)^2/b^2=1.
Would it be right if I divide each side by 39?
However, I am not sure if the equation is one of a circle....?
Thank you very much for helping.

Question 288643: Classify the conic section. (State whether it is a hyperbola, ellipse, circle or parabola). Be sure to use correct spelling or your answer will be marked wrong. 16x^2 + 9y^2 + 24x - 36y + 23 = 0
Also my teacher said that this problem couldnt be an ellipse because I originally thought thats what this was but unfortunately its not so thats why I'm confused, please help!
